What are Honeycomb Panels? Its Features and Application

Honeycomb panels are lightweight but strong materials that are used for building the exterior cladding. They are called honeycomb panels due to their similarity in design with honeycombs. The multiple hexagonal shapes combined to form the panel look similar to honeycombs. It has a different structure, and the panel is composed of hollow hexagonal cells with both end surfaces pasted with a thin metal sheet. It creates a hollow air space between the faces.

The SS 304 honeycomb sheet is commonly used for flats and even curved panels, depending on the required uses. Honeycomb panels provide a specific strength and sustainable structure to ensure well-being in usage. 304 Stainless steel is the standard material used for the construction of honeycomb panels. Due to the unique hexagonal design, the panels are lightweight. The stiffness is improved and stability.

Stainless steel honeycombs have the advantage of soundproofing or sound insulation. The alloys used to construct it aren’t radioactive and volatile. The sandwich-built structure of the honeycomb can be reused and recycled. It contains energy-saving environmentally friendly, and healthy material.

Features of Honeycomb Panels.

Lightweight and Low Density.

The design and unique structure of the honeycomb panel is a great cellular structures. It consists of hexagon designs arranged to enhance the solid portion with a small cross-sectional area. The density of the honeycomb panel is considerably lower than other sandwich materials. As there are several hollow portions within the hexagon, that consist of the viscosity. Since the density is lower due to hollowness, it also becomes lightweight. It contains 11% of steel and 23% of aluminum alloy.

Improved Strength and Rigidity.

The mechanical structure of honeycomb panels is connected similarly to beams. The hexagon’s hollow format provides good support to the sheets on both sides. It is similar to the web of I-beams and bears shear stress. The rib of the SS 304 honeycomb sheet isn’t thin and is dense compared to the overall structure of the panels. The entire panel is thicker due to the hexagons, and the core layer is larger than the thickness. Since the stability also increases with a good combination of density and height.

Sound and Heat Insulation.

The material installed to produce the honeycomb panel isn’t heat-insulated. Aluminum and stainless steel is a material that is excellent conductors of heat and even sound. The unique structure in which the honeycomb panel is constructed is made with good heat insulation and sound insulation. The hexagonal-shaped hole occupies space, and the air layers are divided between the hollow structure. It prevents airflow when the heat is converted and the sound waves are also limited.

Application of Honeycomb Panels

Architecture.

In the construction field, honeycomb panels are particularly in demand. They are often used to construct the ceiling for large areas, like shopping malls, commercial buildings, and more. Honeycomb panels are also installed in walls, curtain walls, screen dividers in a soundproof panel, and walls of portable mobile homes.

High-Speed Vehicle.

Stainless steel honeycomb panels are highly present in aviation industries, due to the specifications it offers. Airplanes require lightweight and robust materials in construction, and a honeycomb is perfect. It is also soundproof and better heat insulated. Honeycomb panels are primarily used in high-speed vehicles like planes, ships, and trains.
